“Book club” Course Format:

1. Purchase the course (with or without the book, see below). Quiz and evaluation links will be emailed to you shortly.
2. Purchase or borrow the book or audiobook. If you purchased with the book it will ship within a few days.
3. Complete the book on your own schedule. A PDF of the final quiz is available to use as you read along. See each individual books course materials for the PDF.
4. Pass a quiz on each book (liked in course materials) (must pass with an 80% or higher). Quiz may be taken 3 times. If not passed after 3 attempts, CEU credit will not be awarded, per NSGC guidelines.
5. Complete the course evaluation for each book, and one for the program as a whole.
6. You will receive an email within a couple business days confirming completion of the CEU program. This email is sent manually so don’t worry when you don’t receive it immediately. You can confirm your score (of 80% or higher to pass) on your own quiz.
7. All courses finished each month will be submitted to NSGC the first week of the next month. Official CEU certificates will be issued within two weeks of that submission. The last day to finish a course (pass the quiz & complete the eval) is December 5, 2025 if you want your CEU certificate issued by NSGC in 2025. If NSGC CEU certificate is needed sooner, please email info@theceushop.org and I will be happy to submit to NSGC immediately (with an up to 14 day TAT on their end).

General Description:

The content of this CEU program is three different books: “Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine” by Uché Blackstock, MD, published in 2024, “This Boy We Made” by Taylor Harris, published in 2023, and “Uniquely Human: A different way of seeing autism” by Barry M. Prizant, PhD, published in 2022. The purpose of the CEU program “CEU Book Club 2024 Bundle – 28.3 hours” is to increase the readers’ perspective on multiple topics that will improve their ability to understand different patients and empathize with them. These books provide detailed information on so many important topics including, how racism has impacted the health and healthcare experiences of diverse populations in the United States, a mother’s story about her son’s diagnostic odessey, and how to provide respectful care for autistic people. The target audience for this program is all genetic counselors, regardless of specialty or workplace.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss historical events that have contributed to systemic racism in healthcare in the United States.
2. Define common challenges that autistic people face when working with healthcare professionals.
3. Examine how race impacted the author’s healthcare journey as a Black mother and patient in the book “This Boy We Made.
