A note from the course creator:

The book Uniquely Human provides an in-depth look into one perspective on autism and the best way to work with autistic people. On its own, this book does not provide a comprehensive or well-rounded education on the topic of autism. It does provide an in-depth explanation of a developmental and neurodiversity-affirming approach to autism. A few reasons I selected this book are because this approach: 1) has evidence-based support (as do other approaches), 2) is not as familiar to many healthcare providers as other perspectives, and 3) has helped my own family tremendously.  However, it is important to remember that every person with autism and every family is unique. While this approach will resonate with some patients and families, others will prefer different approaches. I recommend that this book serve as part of your study on autism and not the only education you receive on the topic.

General Description:

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports the prevalence of autism has been increasing, and in 2020 about 1 in 36, 8-year-old children were autistic. Many studies have identified genetic causes of autism, and research continues to paint a fuller picture of the role between genetics and the development of autism. Given the high prevalence of the condition with a complex genetic component, genetic counselors need to be prepared to work with autistic patients and their families.  Autistic people may have difference sensory needs, different ways of communicating, and a different perspective than providers are familiar with. Understanding these unique characteristics is essential in providing culturally responsive and respectful care for this population.  The award-winning book Uniquely Human: A different way of seeing autism (2022 edition) by Dr. Barry M. Prizant, provides the information needed to help providers understand autism and best practices for working with these patients and their families.  In this continuing education program, you will read the book, or listen to the audiobook, and then pass a quiz about the book.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify key features of autism.
  2. Define common challenges that autistic people face, both when working with professionals and in daily life.
  3. Summarize best practices for working with autistic people and their families.
