“Book club” Course Format:
- Purchase the course (with or without the book, see below). Quiz and evaluation links will be emailed to you, as well as a PDF of the final quiz to use as you read along.
- Purchase or borrow the book or audiobook (if not purchased with course). If you purchased a book with the course it will ship within a few days.
- Complete the book on your own schedule.
- Pass a 41-question quiz online (must pass with an 80% or higher). Quiz may be taken 3 times. If not passed after 3 attempts, CEU credit will not be awarded, per NSGC guidelines.
- Complete the course evaluation.
- You will receive an email within 1 business day confirming completion of the CEU program. This email is sent manually so don’t worry when you don’t receive it immediately. You can confirm your score (of 80% or higher to pass) on your own quiz.
- All courses finished each month will be submitted to NSGC the first week of the next month. Official CEU certificates will be issued within two weeks of that submission. The last day to finish a course (pass the quiz & complete the eval) is December 8, 2024 if you want your CEU certificate issued by NSGC in 2024. If NSGC CEU certificate is needed sooner, please email brittany@theceushop.org and I will be happy to submit to NSGC immediately.
General Description:
The purpose of the CEU program “Book Club – Legacy by Uché Blackstock, MD” is to increase the readers’ knowledge of how racism has impacted the health and healthcare experiences of diverse populations in the United States. This book teaches about current and historical examples of systemic racism, and how to use this information to deliver more equitable healthcare going forward. The target audience is all genetic counselors regardless of specialty or workplace. Material covered and skills gained by participants support the Practice-Based Competency to: Demonstrate how disparities, inequities, and systemic bias affect access to healthcare for diverse populations.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss how systemic racism impacts the health of Black people in the United States.
- Discuss historical events that have contributed to systemic racism in healthcare in the United States.
- Apply culturally responsive care in one’s genetic counseling practice.
