General Description:
The content of this session is the book The DNA Guide for Adoptees by Brianne Kirkpatrick Williams, MS, CGC and Shannon Combs-Bennett. This comprehensive guide explores the intersection of consumer genetic testing and adoption, providing adoptees and others in the adoption constellation with practical tools to navigate DNA discoveries related to ancestry, biological family connections, and health. At once an educational resource and a roadmap for personal exploration, The DNA Guide for Adoptees offers clear explanations of genetic testing, insights into interpreting results, and guidance on the emotional and ethical considerations that may arise. Participants will read the book or listen to the audiobook in full.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the clinical contexts in which genetic counselors can provide support to adoptees and other members of the adoption constellation, addressing their unique genetic and psychosocial needs.
- Analyze the available resources for individuals utilizing consumer DNA testing to obtain information related to family connections, ancestry, and health.
- Compare the appropriateness of different genetic test types based on the specific objectives of adoptees, including ancestry determination, family identification, and medical or health-related insights.
The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has authorized The CEU Shop to offer up to 0.5 CEUs or 5 Category 1 contact hours for the activity Book Club – The DNA Guide for Adoptees. The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned at this program for the purposes of genetic counselor recertification.
