Essential Tools for Modern Genetic Counselors

Participants will learn evidence-based practices as tools for maintaining and improving their overall level of personal flourishing. These practices include the use of creativity though painting and journaling, the use of parasympathetic activation through breathwork and meditation, and the use of reflection to define and determine core values and strengths. This series focuses on hands-on activities and workshops.

CEUs: 10 hrs / 1.0 Category 1 CEUs, authorized by NSGC

Format: Live hour-long webinars (no quiz needed) or you can take the webinar series on-demand (5 question quiz per session). You can mix live and on-demand attendance.

Dates: Live webinars are every other Tuesday starting June 3rd, at 9 AM PST/ Noon EST. On-demand until 5/2027.

Flourishing in Focus: Evaluating wholeness & wellbeing

Tuesday, June 3

Course Description

The program will begin with an overview of the entire webinar course. Then we will review the definition of human flourishing and positive psychology. Next, participants will complete a measure to determine their personal level of human flourishing and will identify the domain(s) that require wellness support. Evidence-based tools and exercises to improve flourishing domains will be presented. Finally, participants will select specific tools they will practice in an effort to improve their own flourishing. Participates will be completing an individualized workbook as they follow along and participate in the presentation.  

Compass Bearings: Taking stock of strengths & defining core values

Tuesday, June 17

Course Description

The program will begin with a description of core values and personal strengths. Participants will complete a series of guided written prompts to identify their core values. They will then generate a statement on how they can apply their value(s) personally and professionally. Participants will complete an assessment resulting in a list of their top strengths. They will then create an action plan of how they can apply their top strength based on a published flourishing practice. Participants will be completing an individualized workbook as they follow along and participate in the presentation.  

Creativity & Calm I: Guided DNA watercolor workshop

Tuesday, July 1

Course Description

The program will begin with a presentation of the positive effects of creativity on human flourishing. Participants will engange in a watercolor workshop as they are instructed to paint an unraveling DNA molecule. Participants will be completing an individualized workbook as they follow along and participate in the presentation.  

Burnout & Boundaries: Assessment, reflection & tools for renewal

July 15

Course Description

The program will begin with a definition of burnout in the workplace. Participants will then complete a personal assessment of burnout using a burnout metric. They will record their score in their workbook. Burnout recovery strategies will be presented. A focus on boundaries and boundary setting as a burnout recovery strategy will be discussed. Participants will create a personalized burnout recovery strategy statement and a boundry mantra to add to their workbook.

Breathe into Balance: Breathwork for parasympathetic activation

July 29

Course Description

The program will begin with a review of the autonomic nervous system. We will discuss how sympathetic vs parasympathetic responses impact overall wellness. The definition of breathwork and the research showcasing its positive effects on well-being will be presented. Participants will actively engage in the multiple breathwork strategies that will be presented. They will identify one strategy that works best for them and will list it in their individualized workbook.  

Nurturing the Heart: Assess and practice self-compassion

August 12

Course Description

The program begins with a definition of self-compassion and the three elements of the practice. Participants will complete a measure of their personal level of self-compassion and will record their score in their workbook. Next, we will compare and contrast fierce vs. tender self-compassion types. Then partipants will select a personalized self-compassion practice from examples presented. They will record thier chosen practice in their workbook. 

Own your Worth: Imposter syndrome and comparison

August 26

Course Description

The program will begin with an overview of the imposter syndrome. We will discuss the beliefs, susceptibilities, traits and coping behaviors of those with imposter phenomenon. Participants will then complete a scale to measure their personal level of experiencing imposter phenomenon and will record their score in their personal workbook. Interventions for combating imposter syndrome will be presented and participants will record their chosen strategies in their workbook. A discussion of comparison with workbook activities will follow. 

Pages of Possibilities: Unlocking potential through journaling 

September 9

Course Description

The program will begin with an overview of the research surrounding the benefits of expressive writing and journaling on overall well-being. Various journal prompts and methodologies will be utilized to guide participants in identifying an intentional goal. A review of the neuroscience behind manifesting an intention will be presented. Participants will be completing an individualized workbook as they follow along and participate in the presentation.


Creativity & Calm II: Guided tree watercolor workshop

September 23

Course Description

The program will begin with a continuation of the neuroscience of manifestation. Participants will create a model starting with the intention they identified in the journaling webinar (webinar 8) and work through their model, identifying the beliefs, thoughts, words, and actions required to see their goal to fruition. Participants will engage in a watercolor workshop as they are instructed to paint a rooted tree. Roots, the trunk, branches, leaves, fruit and the resulting seeds from the fruit will represent the stages of their goal being actualized. Participates will be completing an individualized workbook as they follow along and participate in the presentation. 


Grounded & Grateful: Meditation and webinar conclusions

Course Description

The program will begin with a review of the full webinar series. Participants will then be instructed to complete the last pages of their workbook which will collate all personalized wellness tools created throughout the course. We will then discuss the various well-being benefits of meditation and participate in a guided meditation. Participants will be invited to retake the flourishing measure that was offered in webinar 1. Participants will be completing an individualized workbook as they follow along and participate in the presentation.

October 7

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has authorized The Onda Collective  to offer up to 1 CEUs or 10 Category 1 contact hours for the activity Wellness That Works: Essential Tools for Modern Genetic Counselors. The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned at this program for the purposes of genetic counselor recertification.
